Beauty and the Beast
7/27/07 ~ Broadway
Steve Blanchard, Anneliese van der Pol, Chris Hoch, David deVries, Jeanne Lehman, Glenn Rainey, Jamie Ross, Trevor Braun, Aldrin Gonzalez, Ann Mandrella. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

Sam Harris (Claude), Stephen Weber (Berger), Jennifer Leigh Warren (Sheila), Rod Keller (Woof), Allan Louis (Hud), Stacy Francis (Dionne), Marissa Winokur (Jeannie), Alisan Porter (Crissy), and Dan O’Brien (Margaret Mead).
Sometimes called the “Reprise concert,” but this isn’t a concert — it’s a full staging of the show, simply with a superminimal set as suggested in HAiR's staging notes. Authorized archival taping from just slightly left of center, no obstructions, minor generation loss. The nude scene is respectfully blacked out, as is typical for cast memento shoots without sufficient obfuscation of bodily details, and there’s a VERY brief snowout near the end for a second or two. All in all, a fantastic, clear video of a great show, quite representative of the traditional, minimal, small-budget ensemble productions of HAiR. A-

This was shortly after Matt Doyle took over as Hanschen. He flubs his line during the "Vineyard" scene, pauses for a while with a worried look, and improvises his next lines. He mentions this on his Playbill.com Q&A-
"During my first week as Hanschen in Spring Awakening, I completely went up on my lines. After what felt like an hour of silence, I finally started improvising (trying to keep the classical tone... unsuccessfully) and got back on track. My poor scene partner (Blake Daniel) looked like he was about to have a heart attack."

Matt Doyle is fantastic and does great opposite Alexandra. He really has such a youthful look to him is absolutely the most adorable thing I have ever seen. Gerard is fantastic in this DVD. It is shortly after he took over the role full time, so he was giving it 100% and it really shows. Some moments of blackouts but nothing too bad. The end of Left Behind is missing all the way up until the beginning of "the Inquisition" scene. Overall, a great DVD. Comes on Two-Discs. A-

An excellent capture of the Spring Awakening National tour cast when they stopped in Louisville. The DVD is act 1 only. Camera wonders a little bit, and there is a little bit of spotlight washout but nothing to bad. The camera does wonder during the beginning of Touch Me, but gets back on track during the end. Julie did a fantastic job as Ilse and brings her own spin to the role.

Spring Awakening

A great capture of the current cast with a couple understudies. Lucas plays a very sweet Melchior, and his vocals are stellar. There was one blooper in And Then There Were None where Taylor hit the microphone stand too hard and had to scramble to catch it before it fell; he missed a line of the song during this, but he finished strong. Includes audio only of curtain call and Anthony Lee Medina's BC/EFA speech.
